A blackhead is a yellow or blackish bump or plug on the skin that is caused by the accumulation of excess oils in the sebaceous gland’s duct. The dark color which gives rise to the name blackhead is caused by the oxidation of modified sebum which is usually contained in the bump. Blackheads can be a nuisance since they cause uneven skin tone and sometimes the bump can be a little bit painful. However, getting rid of them is not very difficult and there are various methods that one can use for blackhead removal.

Since we know that blackheads are caused by the accumulation of excess oils in the sebaceous gland’s duct, it is important that you reduce the amount of oil you use on your skin. Blackheads are usually more common in those with oily skin and it is therefore imperative that any blackhead removal process start with a change in the type of skin products that one uses. If you are using oil based skin products it would be prudent that you switch to water based skin products. Unlike their oil counterparts, water based skin products don’t clog the skin and don’t contain any oils and thus dramatically reduce the risk of skin getting clogged with an over accumulation oil.

For those who are into home remedies there is a popular blackhead removal technique which involves the use of baking soda, Epsom salt and iodine. To perform the technique you will need to mix four tablespoons of baking soda with four tablespoons of water to form a thick paste which you should then apply to the affected area. Leave it for roughly 3 minutes and rinse it off with warm water. You should then take 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt and mix it with a quarter cup of boiling water and add in 3 drops of iodine. Once the mixture cools, dip in a cotton ball and dab it into the affected areas. This will allow the pores to open up and you can then use a clean piece of cloth or tissue to gently squeeze the blackhead.

Finally, for those who prefer to use medications, the most preferred blackhead removal options are usually Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. These are usually applied directly to the skin and they consequently allow the pores to open up which then brings the oil and bacteria to the surface for easy removal. Using medication for blackhead removal can lead to irritations due to reactions or allergies and it is therefore important that you consult a dermatologist before you opt to use them.
